The History of American Trotskyism: Report of a Participant
Published in Hardcover by Pathfinder Press (December, 1995)
Author: James P. Cannon

Dozens to thousands, life in a real revolutionary movement
cCannon never explains numbers here. Yet, this is the history of a group of revolutionists who went from two or three leaders of the Communist party who learned of Trotsky's critique of Stalin, to a group of a few dozens--The Generals without an Army they were call. They went from only a few ideas to merging and mixing with new currents of workers who came forward as the CIO Upsurge came forward. Their principles helped spark the organization of revolutionary workers in the great strikes in Minneapolis in 1934 and aftewrwards, then to influence workers in the sit down strikes in Flint and Dearborn and Detroit. Then to find thousands of young workers, intellectuals, and student youth in the Socialist party and battle the reformists there, to build Found the Socialist Workers party, found with thousands of members before World War II. But this is not about those numbers. Through most of history, real revolutionists real communists have been forced to fight in small organizations like the movement Cannon built. What this is about is the principles, the ideas, the lessons, the history, how to do things theoretically, how to do them practically, and how to do them right.

A great political adventure story
For those who wonder whether the American working class is capable of revolution -- read this book and be convinced by an engaging scrapper and committed working class hero who was there at the very beginning. Millions placed their hopes for a new dawn on the young Russian revolution, only to be betrayed by Stalin. Cannon tells the story of how he found his way out of the impasse, stumbling on a document by Leon Trotsky at a Moscow convention in 1928. He smuggled it out (in the days before photocopies and computer discs, no mean feat) and spent the next ten years involved in political faction fights, world-changing strikes, mobilizations against fascism...all leading up to the founding of the Socialist Workers Party in the US in 1938. Descriptions of building a fledgeling revolutionary party without funds for a telephone or office rent, are woven in with discourse on the implications of international debate on whether to defend the USSR in the looming world war. He explains the tactical manoevres, gives acerbic thumbnail sketches of various characters -- and makes hard work and fighting for what's right look like a very realistic option.

Holy Bible New King James Version Compact Reference Bibles S
I purchased 2 of these Bibles for my sons. The price was great. I saved [money] on each Bible compared to the price I would have paid for the same Bibles at a book store here. It is a perfect size for little hands like kids have. I rate this #1 kjv version only.

My Soul Winners Bible!
I just bought my second bible of this type. I left my last one inside my jacket pocket back home in the states when I left for missionary service in Brazil. Due to the cost of shipping and all I chose to just purchase a second one through Amazon.com and have it shipped to me direct in the field. (Yes they will do that!!!) I call this little bible my Soul Winners Bible because it can be with me all the time and ready when I need it. At home in the states I take it to work in my shirt pocket or tuck it away inside my clipboard. It has both the Old and New Testaments so I'm not caught without the passage I'm looking for when I need to show someone a prophecy or reference from Isaiah or Proverbs etc. Just a note to those who want to Win Souls for Christ and aren't sure how to organize themselves properly...
1)Get a new clean bible like this one that hasn't been marked up with highlight pens and notes yet.
2) Get a box of colored paper clips and some colored highlight and underline pens.
3) Get several tracts at your local Christian bookstore and do some study.
4)Take the relevant verses and Highlight them and Mark the pages with the colored paper clips. I would recommend you use a system like this one: Red (Blood of Christ) = Salvation. Use Red to mark specific salvation verses from John and Romans... Black= Sin (For all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God...) Blue=Water in the River of Eternal Life Use Blue to mark your eternal Life passages. Yellow= Caution U turn ahead. And Green= Grace Eph 2: 8-10
5)Study the Passages and the tracts and do some earnest Prayer for the Lord to send people whom you can minister to.
6)It is good to pass out tracts... but doing so is not a substitute for building relationships and sharing the gospel and "Giving your personal Testimony..."
7)If you don't have a personal testimony or are not sure how to talk about it... Pray about it and talk to your pastor. He will be able to give you advice on a more personal basis and help you in discipleship.

God Bless you each and all...
Until our Lord comes in the clouds and we meet Him in the air
Your Brother in Christ
Mr. Maranatha

Added Bonus
My beautiful wife gave me this bible for my birthday. It's the perfect size for my doctor's bag, which I take to church. The bonus is that it's "self-pronouncing." A most welcome suprise in that it's not mentioned in the description. Thanks Hon!

Home In The Village: McClellanville in Old St. James Santee Parish
Published in Library Binding by Corinthian Books (15 April, 2002)
Author: Walter Bonner
Average review score:

A Step Back in Time
To read Home in the Village is to be transported to a slower, simpler way of life seldom found anymore. The people of McClellanville are basically good, solid, hard working, God fearing, salt of the earth folks, who struggle through hard times, supporting and accepting each other as best they can. Dr. Bonner has effectively taken us into homes where everyone is considered family, either by blood or long term proximity and has given us a close look at what community really means.

Local author writes about his home village
author of George A. Trenholm, Financial Genius of the Confederacy

Dr. Bonner has described the people of McClellanville, a fishing village on the coast of South Carolina. His story goes back to the early history of many of the groups of people including the native inhabitants and the first European settlers including Huguenots and Anglicans.
The book describes the participation of the residents in wars and shows the way that economic factors affected the lives of the people and influenced where they made their homes. Young people often moved to other areas for financial survival after the Civil War and the great Depression in the 1920's. Both hit McClellanville hard.
Churches and education played a large part in the history of "The Village". Educated women worked at teaching jobs and in local businesses to help support their families. The seventy pictures in the book bring the village people to life. They help the reader to understand why young people in the families have continued to return "home" to visit, raise their children, and often to retire after having careers elsewhere.
Dr. Bonner has written a readable, practical account of one family that is related to most of the McClellanville people, past and present.

Great southern history
I passed by McClellanville every day on the way to Georgetown, SC on business and always admired the natural, untouched beauty of this community and the tenacity of the residents in this tiny southern town to keep the gentile, uncomplicated lifestyle that made the South THE place to live. This book is a well written, accurate and touching compilation of the history of this remarkable village and its people. Definitely a great read.

Horse Owner's Veterinary Handbook
Published in Hardcover by Howell Book House (April, 2002)
Authors: James M. Giffin and Tom Gore
Average review score:

A Serious Equine Health Care Reference
As a first-horse owner, this text was a whole lot more than I needed or wanted to know. For the horse owner who is serious about learning as much as possible about health care problems and how to treat these problems themselves, the book is a winner and probably unique. However, for someone who likes to rely on his/her vet for anything more than the usual maintenance procedures (deworming, treating minor cuts, etc.) and doesn't foresee giving his/her horse injections and the like or treating fairly serious illnesses, a less complete book would be sufficient and much less daunting. Probably an excellent reference for students of equine health and for those who would like to become vets themselves one day.

Detailed information
I find this to be the most detailed veterinary guide, short of buying a veterinary encyclopedia. Of the several I own, most are very general and have a lot of "ask you veterinarian for a course of action." This one tells you the most common treatments so you know what to expect. I go back to my dog-eared copy all the time. As I back-yard breeder, I like Giffin's veterinary breeder's guide, too.

This book has helped my grades in all my horse classes..
Great book!! four hooves way up.. I have a equine science classes and I use this book for research and just to help me better understand the problems and cures for horse problems... Its like a horse vet bible.. easy to read with great pictures..

Host
Published in Hardcover by Villard Books (December, 1995)
Author: Peter James
Average review score:

not just science fiction
This book is incredibly intelligent. You read it and you know you are not just reading something that is totally science fiction, you are reading something that is based on truths and theories. That is why it is so believable. Peter James knew what he was talking about when he wrote this ... it isn't just random fantasy stuff he made up. It's all things that actually could happen, sometime in the future, maybe even now.

Host is definitely a thriller that you can't stop reading. Suspense plays a large part of it ... that nagging need to keep turning pages, to find out what happens next. It is a quick read, not because it is short or super easy reading, but rather because you never want to stop. Another element that keeps the reader going is that the reader speculates and guesses, and the main character, (Joe), does not. You're turning page after page, waiting for Joe to figure it out, but in stead of the answer being revealed a new problem pops up.

This is a very creepy book. Things come back from the beginning to end. Small little mysteries that you pay not much attention to come up at the beginning, and then at the end of the book they all come together and they all make sense. Character that will stop at nothing to get their way or the revenge they desire, (such as ARCHIVE and Juliet), pose a threat to the story and to Joe.

Emotions like devotion, love, and seduction present themselves throughout the story: Blakes' devotion towards immortality; Jack's love for his father, Joe; the seductive ways of Juliet Spring. There is always the need for a goal, but it is that desire for achievement that stands in the way.

This is surly one of those books that you can see turned into a movie. The suspense and the thrill add to it all, (and all the lust of course would make it very popular). As long as Hollywood doesn't totally butcher and mutilate the story, I would be happy to see it turned into a movie. It is that kind of edge of your seat entertainment.

The ending is wonderful ... or rather the epilogue, that is. The final chapter brings everything to a close ... the kind of ending where they all live happily ever after. But then you go on to the epilogue, and that leaves you with a total surprise. I love the ending -- it has got to be one of the greatest endings of all time.

A great read!
This book is a great examination of the next 25 years of technology in our lives. The ideas are fascinating, and the novel is well written. Also look up Eric Harry's books.

Very believeable... it's sacry!
It seems to me that many fictional computer books are written as if the computers were actually alive... the exact thing the main character in Host, Joe Messenger, is trying to achieve. The subject Peter James writes about is very thought provoking in an age where medical medical sciences are advancing quickly, and maybe this book isn't as outragous as one would typically be inclined to think. The elements of this novel do exist, and computer scientists in the field on AI are advancing... maybe someday this will happen... but chances are not in my lifetime. Off of the subject matter of this book- the way Peter James creates his characters is remarkable. Throughout the story I felt I had connected in some way with these characters through nothing more than Peter James' writing style. I'm going to look into more books by this author.

How I Can Find God: The Famous and the Not-So-Famous Consider the Quintessential Question
Published in Paperback by Triumph Books (September, 1997)
Author: James Martin
Average review score:

God is looking for you
Believing in God and growing in faith are not once in a lifetime activities. Rather, belief in God and faith are something that grow and change over time. James Martin, editor of How Can I Find God? offers the reader many opportunities to reflect on who God is and how God can be found in life. Most of the people included in the book are from the Judeo Christian tradition, and most are Roman Catholic, which is logical since the publisher is a Catholic publishing house. Some of the people included are theologians, but others are writers, activists, political leaders, parish priests, and simply ordinary people--all trying to find God in life. Each entry gives the reader the sense that finding God is both a journey and a task, and no entry claims to have the correct answer. Readers can get a sense that as we search for God, we are not alone. Others have the same questions and concerns as we do. For this reason the stories are very helpful.

The book is a great selection for a religious reading group. People who are in a preaching or teaching ministry will also find the book helpful. This book would probably not be helpful for people trying to prove God's existence, but it is very helpful to show that even if we do not always feel God's presence, God is in fact real and very much at work in our world.

Great survey of thinkers and believers on the search for God
I love books that make me feel good (with no moralizing). Contributors are rightfully humble in addressing the ultimate question. Good to hear the spirit alive in people of varying faiths. I passed it on to my mom and my friends, who loved it.

A truly outstanding group of interviews.
What an excellent job the editor has done in terms of bringing together the thoughts of philosophers, clerics, farmers, and even a jailed, cocaine-addicted young man all with their own story to tell and their most intimate thoughts to share. Mr. Martin's well-conceived cross-section of some 60-plus respondees to "the quintessential question" deserves special mention. I can recommend this little treasure highly.

How to Be a Great Astrologer: The Planetary Aspects Explained
Published in Paperback by Hermetician Pr (October, 1992)
Authors: James Braha and Gustave Dore
Average review score:

Great Reference for Astrology Students
Braha's book is a treasured one in my collection. He gives a very informative description of the major aspects (conjunction, sextile, trine, square, and opposition). His book also has a small section on the moon's nodes. According to his bio, Braha's background is in Vedic astrology, and you get a flavor of that in this book for Western astrologers.

You must have this book if you want to do serious astrology
Sun signs, moon signs, and rising signs are not enough. It would be great if there were only 1,728 types of people, and you only had to remember twelve sun, moon, and rising signs, but neither life nor astrology are that simple. The heart of any natal chart lies in the aspects -- the special types of angles between planets. Braha describes them as well as anyone can. Note that outside of discussing the signs and houses of the lunar nodes, Braha doesn't discuss what sign or house anything's in. He doesn't need to.

Simply the best aspect book I've seen.
This book contains very powerful descriptions of the various planetary aspects. I've gotten more positive feedback from those who've read these than from any other book. Really well done.

Holy Bible King James Version Nelson Reference Bibles Special

Author: Nelsonword
Average review score:

Excellent Edition of the New King James Version
I received this edition as an anniversary gift, and have not been able to put it down. The cross-references are wonderful, and the translation definitions are very useful. I would recommend this highly - a beautifully bound, durable book.

A very readable, accurate, and reliable Bible version
When I first became a Christian I was reading the NIV, but upon comparing it to the word-for-word translation in an interlinear I realized that it was not that accurate. The reason for this is the NIV follows a "dynamic equivalence" (thought for thought) translation principle. So I changed to using the NASB, which follows a "formal equivalence" (word-for-word) principle. And the NASB did match up much better to the interlinear.

But then I began to investigate the issue of Greek text type. And my research convinced me that the Critical Text that the NIV and NASB are based on was less reliable than the Textus Receptus that the KJV and NKJV utilize. So I switched to the NKJV as my primary Bible, and have been using it as such for over a decade now.

Now I know there are many KJV-onlyists who consider the NKJV to be a "perversion" of the KJV. But I have taken the time to research their arguments and have found them to be faulty. I present my counter-arguments to the KJV-onlyists' arguments against the NKJV in much detail in the section on "KJV-onlyism" in my book Differences Between Bible Versions.

In my book I quote from numerous KJV-onlyist sources. I look at their arguments against the NKJV in general along with evaluating in detail their complaints on specific verses. And I conclude that yes, there are times the NKJV is not translated as accurately as it could be, but the same could be said for the KJV. And overall, both versions are very reliable.

But the big difference between these two versions is the KJV's use of Elizabethan English can make it very difficult to understand while the NKJV utilizes modern-day English and thus is relatively easy to read. And frankly I see no reason why I should struggle unnecessary with the KJV's archaic English when the NKJV is just as accurate while so much more readable.

To conclude, the NKJV is a very readable and accurate Bible version. One can read it with confidence that they are utilizing a reliable version of the Bible. If the reader wants even more confidence in this regard, then see my Bible versions book. Along with looking at the KJV and NKJV, my book also reviews over 30 other versions of the Bible.

NKJV easy to read
Nelson does a good job with Bibles, and the NKJV is easy to understand. It is also useful as a reference tool to be used with the KJV.
The Bible is God's word. He has revealed His plan for His creation in it, and those who care about what is going to happen in the long run will be glad to read the Bible.

thought provoking messages for parents of all ages
This little book is a source of invaluable insight. My husband and I read one message a night and feel we get great benefit from the wisdom imparted and the special quiet time, as well. Dobson's years of experience with families and children shines through in the poignant passages and ideas presented. This book helps us think about family and child-rearing issues before we face them. Overall, it's a great read for all parents.

A great reminder for any family...
Common sense 'conversations' on subjects every family deals with. A good read/reminder of what is truly important. Each subject/chapter has value and helps you regain a meaningful perspective!

Excellent advice on marriage and children
Dr. Dobson has compiled this thought-provoking book on child-rearing and marriage. He obviously has "been there" with stories and also professional insight into many subjects on children and relationships. I would highly recommended this wonderful, beautifully-done book! I have not read any of his publications before, but I am anxious to look for them in the future.
